A few weeks ago I saw in the media of Guyana a
young man being awarded and referred to as a "computer whiz".
I was very happy to see such thing. However, I made a few attempts
to find out in what area is this young man a specialist, but nothing
much was heard of ever since. I only hope that this poor guy was
not being used by his employer as some sort of advertising gimmick.
This is nothing new in the business of advertising.
It is nice to hear of the Government counting on the promising
Information Technology Industry, but one has to understand that
the backbone of the Information Technology Industry is the telecommunication
infrastructure. As it is, there is still a lot of work to be done
in Guyana in this area. Everybody seems to be very upbeat on wireless
and satellite technology, but so far, wireless networking has
not proven to be fully secure. Land lines out of Guyana have had
a lot of problems in the past. Probably we should look towards
Brazil for some help in this area.
Can Guyana serve the web when its current telecommunication infrastructure goes down as soon as the country gets a few inches of rainfall and the supply of electricity is still not stable?
I wonder.
